The Notations Project is an educational outreach programme inspired by Boulez’s composition Notations. The set of 12 miniatures are each 12-bars long, with wildly different characters ranging from caustic and brutal to seductive and glistening.
The project challenges student composers from schools across the UK to create miniature pieces for solo piano. These are rehearsed in an open workshop, and then performed by students, lead by Artistic Director Alexander Soares.
“An extraordinary talent for making it all so simple – the kids were completely transfixed”

Director of Music, Whitgift School
I am delighted to be collaborating with the talented composer Gonçalo Gato, as part of the LSO Soundhub scheme. We met at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama as students on the doctoral programme (DMus). It is a great honour to be working with him towards a new set of piano etudes. We’ve been testing ideas and developing fragments in a working session at LSO St. Luke’s. Many thanks to The London Symphony Orchestra staff for their support, including the excellent AV team at St. Luke’s which recorded the session.
Stay tuned for further updates!
Alexander has collaborated extensively with artist and printmaker Liz K. Miller. Her project Circular Scores (visualising Arvo Pärt’s Fratres) and A Classic on Vinyl (Debussy’s Clair de lune) have formed the starting point for a series of performances, improvisations and recompositions at various locations across London. Circular Score 9 is the striking image on the album cover of Alexander’s CD, Notations & Sketches.
